William Burroughs: Algebra of Need, an early work of literary criticism about the works of Burroughs from Eric Mottram, as first published in hardcover by Allen De Loach's Intrepid Press (Buffalo, New York, US) for its Beau Fleuve Series in 1971. Cover design (which incorporates silver ink) by Bart Schoales. Back cover photograph of Eric Mottram is by Jennifer Cobbing. This text was previously published in Intrepid, Issue 14/15 ("Special Burroughs Issue"), Winter 1969.  A revised and expanded second edition was published in 1977, and the text of this first edition is the text of "Part One" of the second edition.

The first chapter covers Burroughs' biography and his earliest works.  The second chapter is an overview of the Cut-Up Method and the "tetralogy" of works – Naked Lunch, The Soft Machine, The Ticket That Exploded, and Dead Fingers Talk. The third chapter is dedicated to Naked Lunch. The fourth chapter covers The Soft Machine. The fifth chapter covers The Ticket That Exploded. The sixth chapter covers Dead Fingers Talk. The seventh chapter concludes the book, with a discussion of the concerns of Burroughs, the "humanist of deconditioning."
