A Descriptive Catalogue of the William S. Burroughs Archive II, edited by Luzius Martin and (Barry) Miles, catalogued by Miles and Richard Aaron, as published by Expanded Media Editions (Boon, Germany and Basel, Switzerland) in 2024. Cover design by Brion Gysin. Book Design by Patrick Gloor. Photographs by Ian Sommerville. Printed by Longo SPA (Bolzano, Italy). This is an edition of 400 copies, of which twelve are numbered, and twenty-six are lettered, the remaining being trade copies.
This is the long-awaited second volume of the Burroughs archive, listing of known manuscripts, typescripts, letters, books, papers, periodicals, and other items once held by William S. Burroughs. Many of the items are in the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library, and others are in other public and private hands.
The first volume of the Descriptive Catalogue was released in 1973, edited by Miles and published by Covent Garden Press in collaboration with Richard Aaron's Am Here Books. This was an edition of 226 copies, twenty-siz of which were lettered, signed, and originally contained a typescript page. In the copy I have in the archive – which previously belonged to Allen Ginsberg – Miles wrote that there "is much more to come in later editions..."
This second volume contains the additional material compiled that was not present in the first.
This specific copy of the second volume, which was purchased from the project's Kickstarter page, is copy 11 of 12 numbered copies. This is signed by both Luzius Martin and by Barry Miles, and contains three 5" x 7" photographs of Burroughs taken by Ian Sommerville, all numbered "11". This copy is slipcased in a plain white slipcase.
In the archive, there is additionally letter 'H' of the twenty-six lettered copies, similarly signed and in slipcase. With this edition, there is a single photograph of Burroughs taken by Ian Sommerville, lettered 'H' on verso.
