This is Beat Hotel resident and author Roger Knoebber's copy, inscribed by Burroughs: "For Roger / With love / and baraka / William S. Burroughs / May 22, 1989"

Additionally, this is inscribed by Nick Smart: "December 1988 / Dear Roger, / Here is an interesting life story – / I guess we weren't the only ones who look / back on 1959 at 9 Rue Gît-le-Coeur as a / magical time and place – / Love, / Nick Smart"

Roger Knoebber and Nick Smart were both residents of "The Beat Hotel" in Paris with Burroughs, Gysin, and others. At the time, Nick Smart was responsible for the production and sale of the Left Bank This Month journal while at the location. Roger Knoebber – a minor Beat author – was a close friend of Brion Gysin until his passing in 1986 and was well–acquainted with the Beats who resided at the hotel at the time.

This copy was acquired with Roger Knoebber's Gysin archives from Roger's son Cosmo and is maintained with the Knoebber archive.
