Brochure for "Brion Gysin: Permutations"
Paris, France: Galerie Weiller (exhibition brochure, bilingual), 1973.
6.5" x 5" (folded)
13" x 14.5" (open, single-sheet)
Scarce gallery brochure for Brion Gysin's Permutation exhibition, at Galerie Weiller, nearly next door to the Beat Hotel at 5 rue Gît-le-Cœur, March 20 through April 20, 1973.
This is a literary supplement to the art in the exhibition, which is not pictured in the item. There are three textual contributions present:
- "William Burroughs parle de Brion Gysin", a French translation of a discussion between Burroughs and Gysin in front of Gysin's paintings in the Beat Hotel, in 1960;
- "William Burroughs on the Painting of Brion Gysin", an English translation of the same;
- "On est de là où l'on perd sa virginité" by Brion Gysin [english: "We are from where we lose our virginity"], an artist bio over his history from his expulsion by Breton from the Surrealist group, to his explorations with calligraphic techniques, and his time in Tangier and the Beat Hotel, with a mention of his collaborations with Burroughs and Sommerville.
Acquired from Jeffrey Weinberg (Water Row Books).
