The two books in volume 16 of the Dictionary of Literary Biography (DLB), subtitled The Beats: Literary Bohemians in Postwar America, edited by Ann Charters and published by Gale Research Company and Book Tower (Detroit, Michigan, US) in 1983, in uncovered hardcovers. The DLB is a long series with many volumes beyond this volume 16.

In Part 1, scholar Jennie Skerl writes the entry for William S. Burroughs, which is on pages 45–69. It includes multiple photographs of Burroughs [including photographs by Gerard Malanga and Christopher Felver], reproductions of his book covers, a bibliography, and references.

A photo of William S. Burroughs with Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg, and Peter Orlovsky by Gerard Malanga is on page 137.

The entry for William S. Burroughs' son follows his.

The endpapers of Part 1 include a photograph of Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs by Gerard Malanga. This image is also reproduced on page 244.

Part 2 contains "A Beat Chronology: The First Twenty-five Years, 1944–1969" by Jennie Skerl, pp. 593–606; Burroughs appears frequently in this chronology. Also of interest is the section "Periodicals of the Beat Generation" by George F. Burrerick, pp. 651–688, which contains reproductions of many of the mentioned periodicals, some of which Burroughs was published in.

Burroughs also shows up occasionally in the listings of other Beats in both parts of Volume 16.
