Letter from Burroughs on W. Esbee (1979)
New York City: William S. Burroughs (letter), 1979.
letter: 6.625" x 8.5", single sheet, recto only, no envelope, handwritten.
book: 6.625" x 4.25" x 0.5", 146 pages plus ads, softcover.
This is a letter from William S. Burroughs to Edgar Leone (NYC) responding to a query about whether he was the author of Jimmy, a gay porn novel published by the Parisian Press (US) in 1972. The response is undated, but the included envelope dates it to 22 February 1979.
Burroughs' response is clear: "Dear Mr. Leoni, / I have never written under any other name than my own since I used the name William Lee in the first edition of Junky published in 1953. So W. Esbee is not me. / Sincerely, / William Burroughs"
This letter was apparently trimmed down to be stored in the copy of Jimmy that I obtained it with. This copy of the book has marginalia throughout, including summary notes on the inside back cover.
