SS Roma "Farewell Dinner" Menu, 20 August 1937

Genoa, Italy: Italian Line (menu), 1937.
9.75" x 7.5" (closed); 9.75" x 15" (open), four pages, single-fold.

A "Farewell Dinner" menu for the final evening of the trip from Europe to New York City on the S. S. Roma, Italian Line, dated 20 August 1937.

On 2 August 1937, William S. Burroughs – who had been studying in Vienna – married Ilse Herzfeld Klapper, a Jewish woman from Hanover, in order to save her from the Nazis. On 10 August 1937, William S. Burroughs boarded the S. S. Roma in Naples, Italy to return to New York City. Ilse was unable to come with him due to visa issues, and was unable to join Burroughs in America until 1939.

Very much ephemeral, and likely exceedingly scarce. If ever one wondered what Burroughs ate on his final dinner on the steamship, well... there it is.
