Portraits in Life and Death by Peter Hujar, as first published in hardcover by Da Capo Press (New York City) in 1976. Introduction by Susan Sontag. This is the only photobook by the artist published within his lifetime, and is a meditation on life and death, with twenty-nine images of (at the time) living friends and eleven images of corpses in a catacomb.

This contains a well-known image of William S. Burroughs taken by Peter Hujar. There are also images of John Waters, Robert Wilson, Susan Sontag, Ray Johnson, Fran Lebowitz, John Ashbery, Anne Waldman, and Divine, among others.

This copy, one of the scarce 1st hardcover copies, was acquired as a gift from janet galore.
