Passenger List for the S. S. Roma (1937)

Genoa, Italy: Italian Line (brochure, passenger list), 1937.
7.875" x 4.25", 24 pages, stapled wraps.

A passenger list for the steamship SS Roma, owned by the Italian Line, for departure from Naples, Italy 10 August 1937 and from Genoa, Italy and Cannes on 13 August 1937, for arrival in Gibraltar and New York City.

On 2 August 1937, William S. Burroughs – who had been studying in Vienna – married Ilse Herzfeld Klapper, a Jewish woman from Hanover, in order to save her from the Nazis. On 10 August 1937, William S. Burroughs boarded the SS Roma in Naples, Italy to return to New York City. Ilse was unable to come with him due to visa issues, and was unable to join Burroughs in America until 1939.

This passenger list notes Burroughs as one of the passengers, at page 9.

Thanks to Luzius Martin for inspiring me to locate a copy of this passenger list.

This copy was formerly owned by Elizabeth C. Riley, who boarded on the first leg of the journey from New York City. Ms. Riley's marginalia is throughout this list.
