Three Photographs and Two Notes from Udo Breger to Kevin Ring
Basel, Switzerland: Udo Breger (letters and photographs, with envelopes), 2008
Three envelopes containing two notes and three photographs from Udo Breger to Beat Scene Press publisher Kevin Ring.
The three photographs are signed and annotated on back by Udo and are from February 4, 1989. From an email with Udo, requesting approval to maintain the photos in archive:
"all three were taken on Feb 4th, 1989, the day before William's 75th birthday, at Fred Aldrich's outside Lawrence, Kansas. By the way, it was the first time I fired a real gun, and Wm was all glad to see that I liked it and did quite well. The photo on the right shows little Brian, then step-son of Fred's who owned a small calibre rifle and was a quite good shot. Behind him Bill Rich, assistant to Wm's household. Next is Fred, then Wm explaining something to David Cronenberg who had come to visit for a few days. This was before the making of his Naked Lunch. I had been there since a few days earlier and announced, upon hearing that David would come, well, I'll stay away a bit that they can work preparing the shooting of David's film, and was told that, no, please stay around, since they are not planning to work, David just wants to get a bit of atmosphere around Wm's everyday life."
One of the notes mentions attendance at a Psychic TV concert, and the other discusses a submission for Beat Scene #57 entitled "Memory Guns".
The image of Burroughs firing in the snow at a target was used for the cover of Lars Movin's book (in Danish only) William S. Burroughs: Fra Cut-Ups til Shotgun Paintings (2021).
Acquired from Beat Scene Press publisher Kevin Ring.
