Original Typescript for Baird Bryant's "Souvenirs of the Beat Hotel", plus ephemera
Idyllwild, CA.: Baird Bryant and Blair Murphy (original typescript + ephemera), 2004
The original typescript for "Souvenirs of the Beat Hotel" by Baird Bryant, published in 2023 in Kevin Ring's Beat Scene Press Pocket Book series as #77, 125 copies. This recollection affords some good insight into the personality and life of Burroughs and other Beat Hotel residents of the time. Included with the typescript is a set of correspondence and photographs -- iterated below.
As recounted by seller Third Mind Books, Kevin Ring noted:
"'Souvenirs of the Beat Hotel' by Baird Bryant was sent to me in April 2004. It was sent on behalf of Baird by Blair Murphy who had organised events, very Beat Generation aligned, at the Grand Midway Hotel in Windber, Pennsylvania. Baird has been invited to one of these events. He had been encouraged to write down his memories. What you have here are excerpts from the quite substantial recollections Baird recalled of his time at the legendary 'Beat Hotel' in Paris. He was there for a number of years alongside Brion Gysin, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and others. A filmmaker and photographer, he is known for his involvement in the 1969 film Easy Rider and controversially for his filming of the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont – his footage included the murder by the Hell's Angels of Meredith Hunter. He was born in 1927 and died in 2008. The text is exactly as Baird presented it."
